My background is in the computer industry, where for over 20 years I designed integrated circuits with computer-aided design tools. I truly enjoyed the work, as it appealed to my analytical nature - I am a Virgo, after all! Yet I was lucky enough to "retire" from my high tech job in 2005, and these days my commute is down the hallway of my rambling yellow house to my studio in the back. |

I've always loved "crafts", and over the years I've taken classes in glass blowing, glass fusing, lampwork beads, wire working, bookmaking, metal etching, silversmithing and more. I first learned about polymer clay in 2004 and found I was more passionate about this medium than any other. Polymer clay is easy to work with and requires very little in the way of tools (although 'requiring' and 'wanting' are two very different beasts). And the polymer community is filled with incredibly creative, talented and sharing individuals. Much of my own growth is due to the willingness of fellow "clayers" to share their knowledge and expertise, most especially the members of my Clayville California Guild. |

My focus so far has been on using polymer clay for jewelry, and I've found that the combinations of shape, color and texture lend themselves to unique wearable art. My designs reflect my love of symmetry and clean lines, yet also allow for a bit of whimsy in the exploration of colors and the incorporation of metal tubing, hardware, semi-precious gemstones and vintage found objects. ~ Julie Picarello |
